Semifinals:
The 2023 Powder Puff semifinals took place on Wednesday, Oct. 11 in the main gym.
Sophomores vs. Juniors:
In the first game, the sophomores faced off against the juniors. The sophomores started off strong on defense and barely allowed the juniors to make any progress down the court. The sophomores eventually scored a touchdown and a two point conversion to take the lead midway though the game. The sophomores relied on their strong defense to hold on, win the game 8-0 and advance to the championship game.
Seniors vs. Freshman:
The second semifinal game featured the seniors and the freshman. The seniors went ahead early and took a quick 8-0 lead. The seniors then scored another touchdown and two-point conversion to double the score and lead 16-0. However, the freshman fought back and quickly responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion of their own to cut the seniors’ lead in half to 16-8. Despite the freshman’s best efforts, the seniors were able to keep their lead and win 16-8 to earn a spot in the championship game against the sophomores.
Championship Night:
The championship and third-place game happened on Friday, October 13 in the main gym, right before Fall Function.
Third-Place Game:
In the third-place game, the freshman took on the juniors. Despite the juniors being older and more experienced, the freshman had a great performance. After just scoring eight points against the seniors in the semifinals, the freshmans’ offense surged in the third-place game as they went on to score 28 points. Their defense was solid too, and they ended up winning 28-6.
Championship Game:
The much anticipated championship game on Friday night did not disappoint. The game was very competitive and intense, with many aggressive plays and controversial calls. The sophomores’ defensive dominance from the semifinals game against the juniors carried over into Friday night as they started off the game with back-to-back interceptions. Despite this, the seniors got on the scoreboard first with an amazing touchdown by a long pass to Kaitlin Blanchard. The game was by far the most physical game of Powder Puff as many players fought for position, with the seniors knocking many players to the ground. The sophomores were able to score a touchdown late in the game with an impressive catch from Merritt Livingston, but after failing to score a two-point conversion, the sophomores simply ran out of time to score again. The seniors dramatically won 8-6 and became the 2023 Powder Puff champions.
