Feb. 11, 2024 marked the 58th annual Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is an event celebrated by both hardcore and casual sports fans where friends and family gather to watch the two best teams in the NFL compete for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy. This year, the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs were the final teams to compete.
The game began right at 6:30pm with the Chiefs winning the coin toss and handing off the first chance at offense to the 49ers. After a failed rush at the end zone, the Chiefs attempted the same, but to no avail. Both teams were sharp on defense, proving to the millions watching why they both deserved their spots at the Bowl. This back and forth continued for the duration of the first quarter, with the first 15 minutes of match time ending with a score of 0-0.
The second quarter, though not much more exciting than the first, showed the 49ers taking the lead over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers eventually reached field goal range and took the shot, scored and gained a three point advantage over Kansas City. Despite this, the first half would still end with this being the only points left on the board.
With the relative lack of excitement of the first half, Usher stepped in to get fans hyped again with his half time performance. Usher sang many of his popular songs, even bringing on other artists such as Alicia Keys and Lil Jon. While a relatively tame performance compared to some in the past, Usher did a great job at reengaging the audience and getting people excited for the second half.
The second half of this game was much more eventful than the first. The Chiefs were down by seven and got the ball to start the half, however, on the first play, Isaiah Pacheco fumbled which set back the rest of the drive. Two plays later, Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to the 49ers defense.
After this, there were a couple of punts and both teams just playing the field position game. Harrison Butker, the Chiefs kicker, drilled a 57 yard field goal. Then the 49ers fumble a punt which led to a Marquez Valdez-Scantling touchdown the very next play for the chiefs. The 49ers responded with a long touchdown drive ending with a Jauan Jennings touchdown from Brock Purdy.
The Chiefs had to respond with less than two minutes left. Patrick Mahomes led a game tying drive to force the game into overtime.
Once in overtime, the 49ers decided to receive the ball first which was controversial. They had a very nice drive but had to settle with a field goal. This is where Patrick Mahomes started to work his magic. Mahomes ended the game with a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman.
The final score of this game was 25-22 Chiefs. The players and families stormed the field, with emotions running high! Mahomes was awarded his third Super Bowl MVP. Mahomes is well on his way to becoming the GOAT of the NFL.
The Chiefs’s celebration included the famous Taylor Swift’s embrace of Travis Kelce. The other side of the field was the 49ers players crying after a well-played game. This was an intense season finale to this year’s NFL!
