The 2023-24 spring sports season is officially underway. With many new players and coaches, CCS attempts to cap a year of change off with athletic success.
Baseball
The Carmel Christian Varsity Baseball Team had a solid start to the season with a comfortable 10-5 win over SouthLake Christian Academy on February 27. Sophomore shortstop Caden Tarr was the driving factor in the Cougars’ dominant win as he hit a three-run home run and had multiple stolen bases. Tarr’s performance has not gone unnoticed as he has been nominated for the Charlotte Observer’s Boys Athlete of the Week for the week of March 8. Despite the impressive season-opening victory, the team lost consecutive games by losing 8-1 against Union Academy and 5-1 to Cannon. With a 1-2 record, the Cougars look to improve and grow throughout the season under the new varsity head coach, Heath McKay. The team’s next game is on Friday, March 8 at 4:00pm as they face off against Charlotte Latin at home. Along with the varsity team, the JV baseball team also started its year off strong with a narrow 6-5 victory over Hickory Grove Christian on March 4. However, the team experienced a tough home loss in its next game against Charlotte Latin. JV looks to bounce back in its matchup against Metrolina Christian Academy on Tuesday, March 12 at 4:15pm.
Soccer
The Varsity Women’s Soccer Team’s start to the season did not go as planned. They suffered two tough losses to start out the year. However, the team responded well in its next match as its defense kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Cannon, with sophomore Harper Connell scoring the decisive goal. Despite the impressive victory, the team lost 1-0 in its next game in a hard-fought battle against Covenant Day. New head coach David Fox has time to work with the team during a brief break in the schedule as they do not play again until Tuesday, March 12 at 5:30pm against Wesleyan Christian Academy.
Tennis
Florence, South Carolina, where the Varsity Men’s Tennis Team began its season. The team had an impressive showing in its Florence tournament as it finished in 5th place out of 16 teams and walked away with a 3-1 record. While on the trip, the team spent a bunch of time together on and off the court, and sophomore Eli Chen said that this favorite part of the season so far has been “spending time with the boys.” Many players are excited about what the future holds, and junior, Christopher Grace, even said that he is “most looking forward to being in the starting lineup” for future matches. Led by new head coach Chris Duncan, the team is off to a strong start, and looks to carry its early season momentum into its matchup against Providence Day on Thursday, March 7 at 4:15pm.
Golf
The Varsity Men’s Golf Team had an impressive early season outing against Providence Day as they won with a combined score of 158-170. Freshman Reid Huxley had a score of 37, Seniors Cole Bryant and Sam Bartholomew had 39, and 8th grader Alec Motherwell had 43. The team’s next match is on Thursday, March 7 against Gaston Christian at 3:30pm.
