With the need for engineers in today’s society growing, more people need to be educated and interested in talking. This interest is mirrored in Carmel’s classes and our engineering program’s growth.
Since Marlin Mogusu, a well-loved science teacher, arrived at Carmel, engineering has been high on his agenda. With his personality and the creation of his class, many students were compelled to take Engineering and Robotics classes. This has caused a lot of growth in the past few years. The first signs of success started with the curriculum Mogusu has started to implement. This curriculum is called Project Lead The Way (PLTW). Right now his teaching incorporates a hybrid between PLTW and other engineering lessons. Next year Mr. Mogusu looks forward to the full incorporation of PLTW.
Mogusu had many experiences that led him to his interest and passion for the field of engineering. When Mogusu was a child, both of his uncles, one being an aerospace engineer, played a huge part in creating his interest in the subject. He would take a young Mogusu to work with him, where he would watch him work on the planes and even lend a hand. Both of Mogusu’s uncles helped him learn all the important aspects of engineering. With his carpentry skills, Mogusu’s uncle taught him how to create structures with wood. This allowed his creativity to flourish and expand. With the many skills learned from his uncles, the path to engineering seemed straightforward and pre-paved.
Currently, the engineering classes are working on drawbridges made out of popsicle sticks. Key requirements of these bridges include: being able to hold twelve pounds and the ability to rise. Future projects for Mogusu’s different engineering classes include a hydraulic labyrinth (puzzle), robotic cars, and potentially, a construction crane. Of course, with the excitement of these projects, all of the students are looking forward to the remainder of the year.
Some current students of the class are excited to further their engineering knowledge in college. Dylan Wilson, who just joined Mogusu’s engineering class, has always had a calling toward the subject. Wilson has applied to many top engineering schools, such as Auburn and N.C. State.
He also took his passion a step further by doing an internship with a construction company during Carmel’s J-Term last year. Another student of Mogusu, Zach Watterson, has plans to pursue engineering at Auburn or N.C. State. One of Watterson’s favorite parts of Engineering is how useful his problem-solving skills become when working in the craft.
Engineering is a wonderful field of interest and it is an honor to have Mogusu leading our engineering curriculum with such a fostering learning environment.
