Shane Durso is a current sophomore here at Carmel and a well known name among his peers. Durso is known for his skills on the soccer field and his friendship to many, yet there is a lot more to his story than meets the eye.
Durso’s successful soccer career started at age five during his early years living in Michigan. Shortly after, at age six, the Durso family made the decision to move to the Carolinas. Durso’s first club was Charlotte United, where things really took off for him. Through two entire seasons with the club, his team did not drop a single match. This is unprecedented in the soccer world and is not seen often. After his success with Charlotte United, Durso decided to move to Charlotte Soccer Academy. Though he was only there for a short amount of time, Durso met his current head coach, Chase Wickham. This is a familiar name within the Carmel family, with him being known as Carmel Christian’s varsity soccer coach. Durso immediately proved himself after transferring to Carmel Christian, starting on varsity in eighth grade. A recent accomplishment of Durso’s, is making the allstate team in 2024. Durso has and is still doing his best to lead Carmel Christian soccer to another state championship.
Durso’s family comes from the Great Lakes State, otherwise known as Michigan. Other than Durso spending the first six years of his life there, his mom, Stephanie Durso, grew up in the state. Durso’s dad on the other hand, Paul Durso, grew up in Brooklyn and eventually found his way to Michigan. Both parents made the decision to attend Liberty University during their college years, with Durso’s dad playing soccer there. Once they met at Liberty, the rest was history. Durso also has two brothers who are a part of the Carmel family. Evan, who graduated in 2024, is currently attending Samford University in Birmingham, AL. Durso’s other brother Reid, 13, is a currently in the seventh grade. Reid, unlike his brothers, plays basketball, a new sport in the family.
Although soccer is a huge part of Durso’s life, he has fun doing other activities outside of it. Recently Durso and Evan have really taken a liking toward the sport of golf. Each brother gets better day by day and challenges himself to learn the skills and techniques. Durso also likes going back to Michigan to visit his Grandpa. His grandpa still lives on one of the great lakes, allowing Durso to have fun with jet skis and other water sports. Durso has also taken a liking to snowboarding over the years, taking a family trip to the mountains each year with the sole purpose of snowboarding.
Durso reflects back over who has inspired him most in his life thus far crediting Chase Wickham, who has led him as a coach and mentor. Durso stated, “Coach Chase not only has taught me more about soccer, but what it means to be a man.” Durso has had many wonderful role models in his life with the likes of Coach Wickham, his dad and older brother. He hopes to serve the same role for his younger brother, teammates and friends.
