Mia Curtinsmith is a new junior this year at Carmel. So far, Curtinsmith has spent most of her time at Carmel making new friends and integrating herself into the sports community here.
Curtinsmith is originally from Sydney, Australia. Curtinsmith is one of four, with two older sisters and one younger brother. She enjoyed growing up there as she mentioned the many adventures she would have as a child. Curtinsmith states, “We were always outside or going to the beach… we were always hanging out at each other’s houses, like, some people’s kids had jet skis at their houses or boats and we’d go out to their house to go swimming or jet skiing.” Because of her time in Sydney, Curtinsmith has also experienced cliff jumping in the forests, or the bush as it is called in Australia.
Currently, Curtinsmith likes to spend her time hanging out with friends and traveling the world, occasionally involving herself in the arts as well. Curtinsmith has been able to travel a vast majority of Europe, having visited Greece, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, France and other nations around the world.
Curtinsmith also spends a large chunk of her time investing in her athletic abilities. She plays volleyball, track and field, soccer and a bit of basketball. She is currently on the school volleyball team
and plays to try out for the soccer team in the spring. She began her career in sports by watching her mother play soccer growing up and being involved in sports with her siblings. Curtinsmith said, “I would switch sports every couple of years. I did swimming in Australia, I did cross country, track and field and I did netball, which is another Australian sport.” Curtinsmith also spends time being active by dirt biking.
Her move to Carmel was a bit overwhelming due to the large number of people that she had to meet, but Curtinsmith, with her welcoming personality, has managed to make many friends this year, having built up her community through sports and other connections.
Even though it is only Curtinsmith’s first year at Carmel, she is excited for all that her time at Carmel will bring!
